Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist
Gresham, OR

Pediatric dentist with young patient at Douglas L. Park, DDS, Pediatric Dentistry in Gresham, OR.
Brushing and flossing are important for everyone, including your child. Just like you, your child should also have regular professional dental care in addition to their home oral hygiene routine.

The question might pop up regarding why choose a pediatric dentist. However, selecting this type of dentist is important for your child's health.

The needs of your child are different from your own. To meet these needs, and to get the best possible oral care, your child should see a pediatric dentist. Douglas L. Park, DDS, Pediatric Dentistry is here to help.

Pediatric Dentist Vs. General Dentist

All dentists undergo four years of education and training. After those four years, they can practice general dentistry. A pediatric dentist is a specialist, specializing in the oral care of children. All specialists undergo 2 to 3 years of additional classroom education and professional training.

Along with specializing in the specific needs of children, we also study child behavior as well as the unique needs and development of small mouths. We also receive extensive training in providing care for both children and adults with special needs.

What Can a Pediatric Dentist Do for My Child?

As pediatric dentists, we can provide care for infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, teens, and those with special needs. We provide some different services for your child, including:
•  Routine cleanings and exams.
•  Additional preventative treatments such as sealants and fluoride.
•  Risk assessment for cavity development.
•  The treatment of cavities and other oral health issues.
•  Early orthodontics.
•  Providing you with nutrition tips and information to help ensure healthy teeth and gums.
•  Offering advice for dealing with oral habits such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, or using a pacifier.
•  Frenectomy procedures for correcting tongue and lip ties.
•  Determining any dental issues your child might be dealing with that can point toward other health issues such as diabetes, asthma, or heart conditions.

Creating a Comfortable Environment

For many children, the idea of going to the dentist can be scary. We do everything possible to create a positive experience. Our office is specifically designed with children in mind. As soon as you and your child walk through the front doors, you are greeted by our friendly office staff. The waiting area is filled with games, books, and toys, which can occupy your child and put them more at ease.

This calm, comfortable atmosphere does not stop in the waiting room. Once in the exam room, we continue to do our best to make sure they feel at ease.

We speak in a calm, gentle tone and avoid using words that can trigger fear, such as pain, hurt, and shot. We show your child the tools that we will use and explain to them what the tools are used for before we touch their teeth.

This can help to make our tools, which are smaller and designed specifically for younger mouths, seem less intimidating.

During the appointment, we encourage both you and your child to ask any questions that you might have. We work with you and your child to understand the importance of good oral hygiene practices.

To help your child feel at ease, we also encourage you to hold their hand or to bring a comfort item from home.

If you have any questions about pediatric dentistry and what we can do for your child, or you are ready to schedule a checkup for your child, contact Douglas L. Park, DDS, Pediatric Dentistry today at (503) 663-8141.
